Hai list!
Something very bizzar happened last night. I was woken up by my mom
around 7 AM (way too early for me.. especially on a saturday.. -_-;;), and
she said to me, "Kaitlynn- I found two baby gerbils on the floor in the
animal room- what cage to they go to?" I was no where near expecting any
gerbils, and since my idea of "baby gerbils" was little pink squirmies, I
said, "Well look through each cage and see who has babies.. and put them
back." Yes, I know, it was a bad idea.. but I was sooo tired. It's really
hard to function only after 4 hours of sleep!
The only thing I could think of, was that, in my cage of three females-
one of them had babies and then others attempted to push them out of the door
to the cage. (it's a large 20 gal. with sliding doors in the front, which can
possibly be pushed open if the tape isn't holding it down.). The fact that
one of them could have been pregnant was reasonable, since I had to remove a
young male from the tank after he tried to mate with his sisters. It was two
babies, most likely not an obvious pregnancy to the naked eye (; .. so it all
seemed to fall in place. Unfortunately, I was out and back into dream land
before I could get up to go check on the little pups and see where they were
supposed to go.
I woke up around 12 pm (leave me alone.. i'm a teenager..^.^), and ran
downstairs remembering the whole 'gerbil sagaa'. I looked around in the tank
of the females, all sleeping quietly, no fights had broken out and no babies
to be seen! Then I looked up into one of my breeding pair's tank, and I
noticed that Orion, the father, was grooming an argente golden. Then I
thought, "wait a sec.. they didn't have any goldens.." And with that,
another argente spot pranced from one side of the tank to another, over to
his "mommy". It turns out the two pups were Homie and Juanita's. I am still
in shock! I have no idea how they got out of their 20gal. tank, and why
Celeste and Orion are taking care of them rather then killing them! Has this
ever happened to anyone before? I didn't know gerbils did this!
Turns out my mom thought they went into that tank only because they were
around the same size, when in fact Juanita's pups are older! They've just
been mal-nourished and weak, the last two surviving pups of a litter of 6.
But now I wonder.. should I put them back in with Homie and Juanita? Orion
and Celeste seem to be doing a great job with taking care of them! More so
than Juanita did.. and I'm afriad she wont accept them after having them
been gone so long. Please help! Thanks.
