On the whole, digital cameras are very good at focusing at close
objects. Better than the normal compact cameras that most people have.
However, all but the most expensive digital cameras have no way of
controlling the light. Photography is all about light. Everything else
is just the tools that manipulate and use the light. The problem with
taking pictures of close up subjects is that you and your camera will
cut out most of the natural light. Also, getting close will mean that
the surface area of the subject that is reflecting light towards the
camera is very small compared to a distance shot. The result of this is
that the amount of light passed back towards the camera is even lower.
With poor light you will get dull pictures. Getting the light right is
the key to attractive photography.
You can probably get reasonable pictures for your webpages with a
reasonably priced digital camera and natural light as long as you take
care. But if you want to do anything more with your pictures you will
probably need to get something more sophisticated. For the price of the
mid range digital cameras you can get an SLR camera with basic lens,
close-up filters, flash and reflectors and still have enough left for a
decent scanner.
