Gerbils like alfalfa. I don't think you have to worry about overfeeding.
What they don't eat, they will shred up into bedding.


 Keep an eye for mites and other tiny creatures in the alfalfa. Also make
sure you are using good quality alfalfa. If the alfalfa is moldy, it will
smell moldy and musty, also it will have black and grey areas from the mold.
Another thing to look for is dust. It is possible that the alfalfa can get a
lot of dust in it from the field.
