It depends what you mean by colours. There are colours that have no
name, and there are several names that describe colours that are either
the same or almost so.
The National Gerbil Society recognises 21 colours or marking patterns.
It does not recognise all the colourpoint colours, nor does it recognise
sapphire and topaz as they are too much like existing recognised
colours. Not all yellow mutation colours are recognised because, for
example, they either look like another colour (Red Eyed Honey) or no-one
has so far proposed a standard. Schimmels are too rare in the UK to be
recognised yet.
