Kanayla's mite problem

 I was wondering about Kanayla's mite problem could she put something like
DE (diotamatious earth) into the tank or mix it with chinchilla dust for
the  gerbils to roll in. It is non-toxic, natural and safe for birds.
Purple martin landlords use it in their birdhouses to control pests. Has
anyone used it to control mites with gerbils?? It can't be good for her
gerbils to be infested for so long with mites. Any thoughts??
