Securely fit a barrier made from heavy wire mesh (heavy enough that neither
gerbil can chew threw it, or push it aside, or crawl under it) diagonally in
the tank, making sure it fits snugly, and is tall enough to reach the lid so
the gerbils can't climb over it, either.

This is what I do, and it seems to work very well.
