Odd behavior

Hello all,             I have a bit of a problem regarding my two gerbils. They have always been well-behaved gerbies with no biting, not too much pooing on clothes etc. However, I went away for 3 days last weekend and when I came back they were really agitated - bit me when I tried to stroke/handle them, ran in spasmodic bouts around the cage, ears pressed to their heads and their sides moving in and out really fast. Today and yesterday I have been playing with them for at least an hour both days, cuddling them and giving them treats, but they are still really stressed out. When I was away I left fresh water, loads of food and about 5-day old bedding. Can anyone help me? I'm getting a bit worried!   Thanks Tommy
