Chinchilla sand is best as it is fine and has no sharp edges to damage
the fur. But any sand will do.

Whenever your gerbil's coat look rough or untidy.

You can place a dish of chinchilla dust in the tank and the gerbils may
roll and dig in it. Unfortunately they also tend to use it as a litter
tray. You can, to make things easier just sprinkle a little sand on
their backs.
For some species, especially Gerbillus species, Duprasi and Bushy-Tailed
Jirds, it really pays to keep them on sand all the time.
