Male+female?

If I had a male gerbil...4-5 weeks old, can I get a female, same age, and have them in 
the
same cage? Or would they start to fight?
And if it worked, would they eventually have pups??
I'm getting different answers from different people, so if somebody could help I would
apreciate it a lot...
