Hm interesting. Do you know if peopel deliberately tried getting it to
reprodcue or not? If so, do you know what breeding method they tried? (eg:
bred the short tailled one back to a paren or a sibling or to an unrelated
gerbil?)
I tried to look for articles on short tailed gerbils in Medline with no luck
:( I'd not want to mess with it if it could cause genetic problems. If its
like what I work with in other rodents (I breed tailless rats without
physical health problems), It could be reproduced even though at times it
looks like a "fluke" (In litters of 12 - 18 babies with rats we are luck to
get one or two taillesses, and thats provided we have all the right
modifiers brought together- otherwise we get nothing!)
I will try to get soem photos of the lil guy eventally, at the moment its so
tiny i can't properly focus on the tail with my camera.
