Gerbil Changing Fur Color

Our two-month-old gerbil is changing colors.
He was born pink, then he looked like a dark-eyed honey (golden fur,
white belly, & black eyes).
Now, he is getting darker and darker like an agouti.

His dad is an agouti, so he's cute.  But...
What happened to our little golden colored baby?
