I'm wondering what is going on with one of my gerbils.
He's kept in a tank with his parents and their newest litter who just opened
their eyes a couple days ago. He's going to a new home soon. But tonight I
got him out and he was fine, running from hand to hand as usual and I put him
back into the tank. He ran around for a bit and froze. So I picked him up
and he squeaked at me while I did so. Then I held him close and he didn't
move at all. I could flip him over on his back and he'd just lay like that.
So I set him back in his tank..still nothing. I picked him up again and took
him into the kitchen to show someone how he was acting. He just sat on the
kitchen table and didn't move. Then I showed her how I could flip him over
and he layed there some more. So I thought I'd see how he'd react if I let
his weight roll him off of my hand on onto the table (no I didn't drop
him..just rolled him onto the table) And he snapped out of it and started
acting like a normal gerbil again. During this time his eyes, ears and
whiskers didn't look droppy. I returned him to his tank and he walked around
a bit and then froze up again a couple of time..just not as bad. Then inside
of a glass jar he froze again and the 3 younger gerbils all gathered around
licking his face..trying to crawl under him and really making a fuss about it.
To give you an idea how he was acting..if any of you have been holding a
gerbil and a dog walked into the room and they froze to watch it...but mine
acting a little more extreme when it came to freezing. He wasn't shivering
or anything that reminded me of a seizure, even though I've never seen a
gerbil have a seizure. Is this what happened? Or is there another example
of what's going on. Please let me know.
