Hi everyone,
Yesterday I went to the vet's and he said gerbils can show this kind of
chewing behaviour when they are in extreme stress. Or lack certain
nutrients but that is not the case here I think. I now put the pair in a
simpler cage away from the others and he hasn't chewed his paw again. The
nails and some toes are missing but for the rest he is ok, he doesn't seem
to be in pain because he also uses his paw to scratch his ear.
I keep my gerbs in pairs of two males in really large cages with lots of
tunnels below ground level, and I think that makes them scary sometimes.
One time before this, two gerbils attacked each other when a new gerbil
arrived in another cage in another room. They smell something, but don't
know where it comes from. I think I'll simplify my cages so that the gerbs
only have two or three tunnels and a table with playthings and food.
greetings,
marielle
