The problem with antibiotics is that technically a clinician should test
to find out which type of organism is causing the infection and then use
the antibiotic that is most effective. There are also other factors, for
example, Baytril, which is normally very good against a large range of
conditions, can cause abnormalities in the growth of the skull and
therefore should be avoided in pups and in pregnant females.

Unfortunately, these days many vets simply use large quantities of
Baytril without much regard to whether this is appropriate or not. One
factor is that testing the infection can take several days and can be
costly.
