Is it possible for a gerbil to have asthma or alergies? I know I can't even
get near my gerbils, let alone play with them, when they've been into
anything other than good ol' shredded paper....pine and cedar are the worst,
with alfalfa being another one of those highly alergenic things, too......I
sneeze my head off and MY lungs get all choked up and start "clicking" if
I've been in or near that kind of stuff too much....that's what made me
change my choice of bedding even before I know that it was also unhealthy
for the gerbils, too.

Cedar is much worse, but pine can cause problems. This seems especially
common in the US.

It may depend on the age of the pup. The clicking problems we have
experienced occur when the pups are about 20 days old and do not appear
to be as strongly related to pine and cedar as the problems I know
Elizabeth has had with pups only a few days old. With the older pups
antibiotic treatment is necessary. I don't know if younger pups clear up
without drugs.
