I think it's hopeless but I'll ask for advice anyways.
I'm trying to introduce 2 adult females to each other. I've split up my
breeding pairs and would love to get these two to live together.
I've had them in a split cage now for about 6 weeks. I tried putting them
together after 2 weeks and Cricket attacked Ruby. Lots of blood but not much
damage. I separated them again for about 2 more weeks and tried it again.
This time, the behavior pattern was fascinating to watch.
First they would stare at each other intently. Then Ruby would go hide in
the ceramic pumpkin. After a while Ruby would venture out. Cricket would
stare at her again and Ruby would once again crawl back in the pumpkin. This
went on for about 1 hour. Then, when I turned my back on them they suddenly
started to fight. I think Ruby was sick and tired of hiding in the pumpkin
and decided it was time for a showdown. I got them separated after no more
than 2 minutes.
By then Cricket was bleeding severely and both of her back legs were damaged.
Ruby didn't look hurt at all. It took a couple of days before Cricket could
walk again.
So, should I give up? I don't really want to risk having Cricket injured
again. But I really hate to waste my large cage for 2 gerbils living
separately.
Thanks for the advice.
