You said you put them in a tub. If you have introduced them in a split
cage, it is much better to introduce them in the split cage. The whole
point of the split cage is to make sure both gerbils are familiar with
the scent of the other gerbil being in their territory before they have
to confront one another. It may even allow them to establish dominance
relationships before they even meet. If you then introduce them
somewhere else you run a high risk of undoing all your work.

This is all part of the relationship between scent, territory, and
gerbil social interactions.
