This means that the eye is running for some reason. Gerbil "tears" are red
in color. It could indicate an illness, like a respiratory infection, or
there could be something irritating the eye- something in the environment
(shavings, for example) or something in the eye. I have always wiped the
eye with a damp cloth and, if the build-up returns, I apply a veterinary
ophthalmic ointment, which has always cleared it up in a few days. Unless
it may be due to a respiratory infection, in which case antibiotics will be
in order.
