When our paraplegic gerbil Sam was still alive, we wrapped his hind
feet with band-aids. This kept him from chewing on them.
There is a technique to this which takes practice (aside from dealing
with the squirming gerbil!) I will give further tips if desired.
At the time, some other list members suggested anointing his hind feet
with Grannick's Bitter Apple. This is typically available from
veterinarians. We didn't try this ourselves, tho.
Sam lived for four months after his spinal injury, and I felt his
quality of life was good. However, he maintained bowel and bladder
control. . . I think you said your gerb needed some help in those
departments? She may be worse off than Sam was.
Sam ran around as if he didn't know his back legs didn't work. We had
to be careful to make sure he didn't roll off the edge of the couch
when we were playing with him! Gerbils seem to be pretty good at
dealing with these disabilities.
