Just a sidenote: When my Pookie had a leg removed, the vet used aluminum
staples instead of stitches. He said that small animals tend to leave the
staples alone where they would chew on stitches. It seemed to work,
neither Pookie nor his cagemate Rascal acted like they even noticed the
staples were there! Perhaps it would be good for gerbil owners facing
surgery on a gerbil to ask the vet about aluminum staples.
