I find when they start acting listless and off, alternating between moving
around the cage for no reason, then hiding in a corner; they are in
active labor. Sometimes they sit with nose in the corner, sort of rest
their chin on the glass, and sit there panting lightly with eyes mostly
shut.
When you see signs of active last stage labor, is when to get the
comfy padded stool and settle in for the wait. Or, if when you're
checking, you see signs she has a baby around...then she is in
active delivery. I've not seen a gerbil deliver less than two; so
if you see one, you are in time. :)
