This is what my vet who has specialized in small animals told me about mites.
They themselves will not kill the animal directly, they could however make it
susceptible to other illnesses by weakening the animal. The resulting illness
could ultimately cause the death of the animal. You should remember that when
a small animal gets sick it can fail very quickly.
