Yes that would cause the fight. Never put toys in a tank that has other
gerbil smells on it. The toy must be throughly cleaned first. Sorry but I
cannot tell you the best way to do the cleaning especially on wood.
I am doing the split cage

I would leave them in the split tank for a week maybe two,,, no sense taking
chances. be patient.
