It is not common. We have seen it once in a pet shop, once in a video
sent to us and once in gerbils we were breeding.
It does seem to be inherited, but does not necessarily breed true. IE,
DPPxDPP does not produce 100% DPP. Not least because pied x pied does
not produce 100% pied.

I have not seen this, but Lilacs seem the best colour for showing up
variation. DPPs are more obvious with lilacs, as is moulting patterns.

Other than moult patterns, which change, all unconventional patterns I
have seen have been in pied animals.
