In the UK patched was a term for gerbils with less white than pied. The
conclusive feature was that pied gerbils had to have a collar.
This has been changed now. In the UK the pied standard covers all
gerbils that do not have the "classic" markings (ie spots on only the
nose, forehead, neck and tip of tail.
