That is a matter of opinion.  Some people don't like to leave it in because
1)  the gerbils may use it for a bathroom and 2) it's rather expensive, and
if you don't leave it in you can reuse it.  Personally, I don't mind if
they use it for a bathroom, it keeps the rest of their home cleaner!  I use
mostly sand with a thin layer of chinchilla dust on top.  They roll in it,
which pretty much takes care of the chinchilla dust, then most of them use
it for a bathroom.  I dump the sand out and give them fresh sand when they
seem to need it, usually every 2-3 days.  Using mostly sand keeps the cost
down, too.  I get a 50 lb bag of play sand for $2-3!
