The dilute gene appeared in a German lab. Some German and Dutch
geneticists are working on sorting out the various colours this gene
produces. Initially they had problems breeding the dilute gerbils and
have had to spend a year out crossing them to avoid the initial
problems.
The Gerbil Genetics Group as they are known want to make sure they
understand what the various combinations of genes will look like before
they release this new gene to other people because it is less
complicated than sorting out the genetics of an unknown colour.
