It is a bit of a lottery. some females seem to get on better with
younger females that do not threaten them, others seem to be happier
with ones that can't be beaten up.
On balance I would go with a gerbil of similar size and age.
Whichever you try, make sure you use a split cage and give them at least
a week to get used to one another before removing the divider.
