My DEH, Linsee, is turning out odd. His undercoat is about the
color that a true DEH should look like, but the top coat is a
very light, cinnamony color. The undercoat shows through easily
so it looks like he's a white/cinnamon/brown striped gerbil. It's
peculiar. He started out, when he was young, looking just like
regular DEHs. Then he went through a molting process where the
light color came in, leaving patched of DEH on his head, base of
the tail, etc. and now it's just all one color. I was thinking
LDEH, but he looks quite different in coloring than my old LCEH
pied.

Agouti A*PpCCGgEe
PEW *appchchGgEe

He's expecting a litter on the 1st of Sept, so maybe his kids will give me
some idea of what he is. His siblings to date have been several various
colorpoints, argente golden, agouti, PEW, and grey agouti.

Sorry for the cut-and-paste on two messages ... I'm working from the archive
and trying to get two things at once.

He sounds exactly like a schimmel. Is his tail still more DEH-ish/orangish?
Take a look at my gerbil color page for a premolt and soon-after-molting
young schimmel.

The agouti has to be carrying Ccb or Cch to make a form of PEW, and the "PEW"
either cbcb, chcb (agouti either Ccb or Cch), or chch (agouti Ccb). Plus, if
he is a schimmel, that makes the parents Eef x Eef ... or possibly Eef x eef.
Maybe tracing the line as far back as possible will help in this mystery.
Those recessive genes can "pop" out of seemingly nowhere.
