I had hamsters for years when I was a kid (early-mid 80s) and a few
gerbils. I always used either pine or cedar because I didn't know any
better. It never seemed to bother the animals (no outward symptoms that
I can remember) but now I wonder if maybe they might have lived longer
if on a better bedding. Now that I know a little better I use Carefresh.
Better safe than sorry, in my opinion. And it seems to be a little
easier to dig through than cedar or pine shavings, which my gerbils
definitely appreciate. My local pet store only carries cedar, I had to
go a little farther to get Carefresh, but it's worth it if it benefits
the animals.
