Yes, both of the parents carry the minor 'a' gene.
AaC*E*G*P* is the genetic code of both the parents.

The black pups inherited a minor 'a' gene from each parent. The minor gene
is more commonly known as the "Recessive" gene.

The recessive gene is only expressed (seen) when an animal gets one from
each parent. As is the case with your black pups.
