Most likely, he had a stroke. We have had gerbils as young as 3 months
die suddenly from strokes. Gerbils are very susceptible to strokes for
anatomical reasons. A stroke can either kill a gerbil outright, or it
can leave the animal paralysed down on side. In the later case, the
gerbil may recover if it can still eat and drink.
