Subject: C : Confused!
Hello again.
Regarding gerbils being frightened, and going into an almost seizure-like
state. I was under the impression that you are to leave them alone when they
have this type of seizure...but I read at gerbils.org that you are supposed
to pick them up and keep them warm. I am confused as to which solution is
the proper one?
Please help, as my gerbils have these seizures from time to time.
Thanks,
Jason
I think you may be confusing two different things here. Many gerbils,
particularly young ones, have epileptic-type seizures. They nearly always
recover from these very quickly. As they are usually caused by the stress
of unfamiliar surroundings or over-handling, the best thing to do is to put
them back in their cage with their mates where they feel safe. Gerbils can
also suffer from strokes in the same way that humans can. This is much more
serious and sadly some gerbils may die as a result. For those that survive,
it is vital to keep them warm. Also they may temporarily be paralysed and
require hand feeding. However, even in this scenario, i would not advocate
over-handling. You just need to make sure the cage is warm and that you
keep a close eye on the gerbil.
