One reason may relate to a number of factors that link the sex of a
gerbil to both the ovary it originated in, the gender mix of the litter
the parents came from and other factors. This would make it more likely
that some litters will be unbalanced in gender distribution.

Even without these factors it is possible that any litter will have an
unusual mix of males and females.
