I know the feeling about them kicking out the stuff, But I resolved that
with a simple kit you can do.
Get a roll of wire screening used for storm doors, and the next time you
clean out the base of the cages, cut out a size large enough to create a
basket around the cages, that is - cover the entire bottom, and have the
edges hang out , but when you snap back the cage to the base, the wire will
raise upwards, thus acting like a basket.
I use the recycled paper stuff, and also use corn cob on the bottom of the
cages, this makes it harder for them to kick out the stuff, but sometimes if
they keep doing it, you can push it back in, in effect a neat game called
tug of war, they like that.
Just my 2 cents.
BYW folks - sorry for coming on strong about that virus, I did put on her my
delete filter - I am not taking any chances.

Subject: Am I the only nutcase with cages.
I have always had hamsters what did I know, but I don't have tanks
but I am using small animal cages, my 13 gerbils seem real happy with
the two cages that I have. Oh and for the litter count, we had a
litter of 5 in August, and a litter of 6 in September. The animal
cages are ok, but dang they make a mess kicking there litter out all
over the floor. Maybe I do need to get tanks, but I was afraid they
would not get enough fresh air. Plus after spending all the money on
the cages already. They are nice size cages, all metal so there is
nothing for them to chew through.
Any one have a web page with the colors of gerbils on them so I can
learn the prober terms. The original two were the normal wild looking
brown, with some black fur. Most of the kids look like them, except
for tripod (only three legs, one back leg is missing), tripod is
beige with pink eyes, and one of the newer ones in gray with pink
eyes, and one of the other newer ones is black (or a real dark smokey
gray) with white around the paws.
