I'm happy to hear you had the compassion to do this. I have a
three-legged gerbil whom I bought under similar circumstances. He has
become quite tame, and is a nice little pet. I also called him Tripod
at first, but then wanted to "get past his disability," so I changed
his name to Petey.

Does Tripod look ill right now? If so, perhaps a quick visit to the
vet and a round of antibiotics might help. I wouldn't consider him
(or her, sorry, I don't know) doomed by a long shot! These little
critters are scrappers!
