I wouldn't use wood for a rat cage.  Rat urine is not odorless like gerbil
urine.  It smells strongly.  Rat cages need to be cleaned thoroughly.  Wood
tends to hold onto smells.

Also keep the rats well away from your gerbils.   The gerbils will not be
scared of them, but the rats might attack and kill the gerbils
