The liquid vitamins for gerbils aren't really necessary- once in the water
they break down very quickly and by the time the gerbil drinks there is
little active vitamin left. The milkbones (as I understand it) provide
extra protein, but they probably are also a source of calcium. If your
gerbil is eating a balanced diet, he'she should get all the vitamins and
nutritional requirements from that. I believe Julian also said that if
there is a need for extra calcium, you can offer a little bit of
cuttlebone. But make sure you don't overdo it either.

For chewing- my gerbils all have wood toys in their tanks that they use to
chew and I offer a ready supply or cardboard and paper as well. I've never
had any overgrown teeth with this set-up.

A couple questions...

I have been hearing that people feed their gerbils milk bones. Are those a
good source of calcium (im assuming that from the name), or should I find
another source? I add liquid vitamins to my gerbils' water, does that
contain calcium? On that note, does anyone know what the nutritional value
of the vitamin supplement is?

Secondly, I give my gerbils toilet paper rolls (or paper towel ones) to
chew on. Is that sufficient enough for them to wear down their teeth, or do
they need something more tough like a piece of wood?

Thanks,
Jason
