Today I received a shipment of gerbils from back east. I live in Salt
Lake City, UT. I had the shipment go directly to the airport and
picked them up there. They asked me what was in it and I told them
and I was promptly scolded and told you cannot send live warm blooded
animals via the Postal Service. Now, granted I have not been on this
mailing list for a long time, but that seems to be how people are
getting their furry friends from one place to another. When I asked
the guy "Are you sure?", he whipped out his rules and regs book and
promptly showed me where it said it, and he was right. He asked me
where they came from and I told him back east and his reply was "Oh -
that figures - in the east and the midwest and the south they will
ship ANYTHING by US mail" That does not leave a whole lot of places
left...I asked him why chickens were ok and he said because they are
exempts, as are reptiles and birds (he used the book to back up that
statement too.) He said if rodents get out of the box it would be a
nightmare. (Guess a 50 lb boa constrictor would be better!) AND since
rodents chew, they can get out of boxes. I didn't feel like getting
into it with him, so I just took my furry friends and left. He told
me next time to use air cargo. So...what do you all think of this? I
decided next time I will just tell them they are baby chicks. (That's
what they thought they were at first from the scratching!) Any
insight or comments would be helpful. Thanks,
Cindy
