I have taken many pictures with flash, b
ut as far as I can see, flashgun never h
urts Gerbils.  Those not used to flash m
ight find it a surprise, though.  My Ger
bils are all used to flashguns.  I never
had any problem.

If you use direct flash, you tend to get
nice birght red eye in the picture.  Try
to use bouncing if you have a unit capab
le of this.  Otherwise, the anti-red-eye
function of conventional compacts and au
to-SLR appears to mitigate the effect, b
ut I personally find using bounced light
the best solution.  I'm sure there are o
ther people like Jackie&Julian who can a
dvise you properly on photographing Gerb
ils.
