Hi everyone
I have not been on the list for quite sometime so
it is kind of nice to be back. I was reading the post on bloody noses and I
think it is caused from the bedding. I had a similiar experience with our
newborn gerbils. They were born on aspen shavings and all seemed well at first.
I then noticed a discharge from one of the newborns nose it spread to the others
as well. It was a brownish discharge that could have well been blood. I think it
was respiratory. I started out wiping their noses clean so that they could
breath. I cleaned out the acquarium and changed to corn cob bedding and toilet
tissue. I also added an antibiotic to the water for the mother to drink and the
problem cleared up. Later when it came time to divide the gerbils up into same
sex tanks I re-introduced the aspen and they were fine. Corncob is more
expensive but well worth it. Have a good listen to their breathing but don't
wait change the bedding.
Good luck!
