With me the problem is them trying to sneak down my back to the floor (I sit on the
floor to play with them). They jump up to the edge of the tank all the time and I
don't mind that. Most of them will try to hang there and wait until I stick my arm by
them for them to climb up. Sometimes one will overshoot the jump and land on the
floor, they always seem a bit startled and I have no problem scooping them up. A few
will aim right at me, and I've occasionally been "thunked" in the chest by a gerbil
that jumped a bit too enthusiastically. Always good for a laugh! Once one jumped
right when I leaned over the tank and got me on the forehead. I'm sure she thought
the resulting laughter meant I'd finally lost my mind. :)
A deliberate sneak down the back, however, gets them a scolding and end to playtime.
Most of them will just tiptoe a few inches down, then when they hear me starting to
scold they scurry back up. Occasionally curiousity gets the best of them and they
keep going. They're pretty smart animals, but they just have to try once in awhile.
:) Some of them took a long time to learn this, I had to be very patient and VERY
consistent. I'm still working on one little girl who is either not as bright as the
others or just more willful. :) She occasionally will jump right off my back to the
floor! Nothing's foolproof.
