Yes, it's most likely they're chewing the bars and rubbing
the fur off. Get an aquarium of at least ten gallons (38 liters)
with a mesh/screen top that fits and fastens firmly, and
that will cure the problem. Once a bar chewer, always a
bar chewer, I've found.

Boredom. And gerbils like to gnaw. Do your gerbils
have adequate things to gnaw on to trim their teeth?
