The most obvious answer is that the two gerbils were different sorts of
white. There are many white gerbils all caused by different combinations
of diluting genes. So, for example, you bred a aaggpp gerbil to a
aac[h]c[h] gerbil, both parents would look white with red or pink eyes,
and the offspring would be all black.
