I have a pair of cotton canvas gardening gloves that go on
easily, and don't fit my fingers really tightly. The idea is
that if the little blighter goes for me, they often get the glove
instead...which hurts a lot less, or if they do puncture, it
isn't as deep (these gloves have a few holes and some
of my blood decorating them).

Gerbils don't bite me much, but when they do they do usually
get me much deeper and it hurts more than most hamster
bites. With the gloves, they often take aim and get mostly
a roll or pinch of canvas instead of me...
