For those of you who may be interested, I finally determined that the stuff the vet found in Gabby's stomach during the autopsy came from the Carefresh litter. Because I'd been keeping an eye out for the stuff, I spotted some in the litter and then called the company. They said it was tiny bits of bark and it is always there. I've seen it in every bag since so I think they're right and I just never noticed it before. The vet did say that Gabby's digestive system probably wasn't working as well as usual due to his age (he was nearly 3). So perhaps he just couldn't digest something that he was able to at a younger age.
