Hi all,
My Cheyenne (and Kaelan) gave birth to 9 pups this
morning. I woke up at 5:45 to one pup and watched her give birth to 2. (very
exciting!) I could tell she was still very large, when I left. I knew also
that she was VERY fat! When I came home this afternoon, I checked and
counted 5 babies, quickly. Later I took a closer look, looking for red eyes and
what not and counted 9.
This is her first litter. For a first time mom, I
know this has got to be a stressful number. I have no other nursing
pairs at the moment, and none that I know to be expecting.
I'm not sure she is feeding all of them. Is there
anything I can do to help her out a bit? Either with caring for the pups,
or giving her something to help?
9 pups! I still can't believe
the number. The largest litter here has been 5. I've had 2 known pup
deaths, 1 with a first time mom with a litter of 5 and and 1 with a 5th litter
with 2 pups. Is there a higher risk for losing pups in a large litter like
this?
Also these babies will need homes in 5/6 weeks! I
also have 4 5 week old pups looking for homes if anyone is interested.
Thanks!
