Sadly, our female trio had a falling-out. Goldie and Baby were chasing
each other around a lot. . . mostly it was Goldie chasing Baby, from
what I could tell. Yesterday I noticed Goldie had a scabby area on her
cheek, so apparently they'd been fighting. Also I'd noticed Baby
sleeping separately from the other two. Another bad sign!
Last night we moved Goldie to her own quarters. It saddens me to have
another solo gerbil! At first I was worried that I'd made the wrong
choice; last night Bossy and Baby were sleeping separately. This
morning, tho, Bossy and Baby were ensconced in the nest together, so I
think those two will be ok.
So this brings me to my question. I wondered about placing Goldie with
Zooty; he is about three years old. I know older MEN are able to father
children, tho there tends to be a decline in fertility. . . what about
older gerbils? I'm grasping at straws here, I know, but I hate to have
loners. I don't want to get another tank and gerbil, but of course I
will do what I have to in order to take care of my gerbils.
Neutering one or both of my lonely boys is not an option; I don't have
a good-enough (experienced) gerbil vet. Wish I did (sigh). I would
really appreciate some input.
