Hi,
I'm looking to get "something different" for a small pet, a "rodent" type. I
lost my three remaining gerbils a couple of months ago due to unknown causes
(possibly aggrevated by a possible fight, but all three died within 24 hours
of each other ... no other animals were affected).
I'm looking for something with no or little special needs, preferably less
"needy" for attention than rats and preferably overall less care (cage
cleaning, etc) than mice and rats. Plus would need to be able to live in
either a 10 gallon or a 20-high gallon or even more preferably, a
Sterilite-type container (about 13 x 24 or there's one size smaller or 13 x
30) as adults. And the
This may sound like I'm being picky, but I'll be likely to bend a little for
another "perfect" pet. I'd really like something more "exotic" if I can find
a breeder near by or a good pet store.
That being said, some of the animals I'm considering are ...
Degus - probably too big? Any special needs? Too needy for attention? What
about likelihood of biting/nibbling during the taming process or otherwise?
These are in a local pet store ...
Bushy-tailed Jirds - if this is the species I'm thinking about, their needs
and care are similar to gerbils. But don't know of any close-by breeder or
pet store that may carry them
Pygmy mice - More of a "watch" pet but sound interesting - but they need a
heat source = possible fire hazard (probably unlikely, but...)
Any other ideas? Not hedgehogs, spiny mice, Duprasi, sugar gliders (need too
much special care/diet or more likely to bite).
Please email me privately with any information and/or suggestions. Also, if
you know of a breeder of said animal in the East TN (USA) area, please
include that too.
Thanks in advance for any info!
Emily
