Angie-Its possible the older one wasnt killed but that
he died and the younger one tried to clean up by
consuming him. Where were the bite marks located and
did you see aggressive actions before he died?
If you try again use a 5 week old baby.

The older one was bitten in the face, on it's back, and it's tail was really
chewed up.  I was out of town but the person who came over to check on my
gerbils said that the young one was chasing him around so she separated them
and the next morning the older one was dead.  There was blood marks around
the cage and a lot of blood in one of the houses.  The young one had a mark
or two on it's face.  The lady said the older one would run away and the
younger one would eventually come up to him and attack him and they'd roll
into a ball until the older one could get lose, then he'd run and hide until
the younger one would find him again.  The lady I had watching them didn't
quite know what to do at first but the third or fourth time they rolled into
a ball they wouldn't separate and since she wasn't sure if she should touch
them (as not to get bit) she picked up the young one by the tail and stuck
him in an empty tank she found.  But it was too late by then.  After I came
home the next day I cleaned out the original tank and found the blood inside
the house.  I wonder what would make him do such a thing, especially since
the older one always fussed over him, cleaning his ears and making sure he
had a bath.  If the young one wanted on the wheel the older one would always
get off and let him have it and patiently wait his turn. There was always
plenty of water and food. ::shrug:: I dunno, it's too bad because the older
one was such a sweet gerbil :( Poor Buttons.
